At Daytripper Dog Training we teach you how to train your dog. We feel that it’s important for you to develop the skills to teach your dog desired behaviours because, after all, it’s you that lives with your dog. The methods we use are all positive, but don’t confuse that with permissive. Dogs need guidelines and boundaries. Let us help you establish what works best for you and your dog whether it’s your new puppy, your family pet or your canine athlete. |

RALLY VERSATILITY WORKSHOP
Date: Saturday, March 13, 2010
Time: 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Where: Cartwright Township Hall, 13940 Old Scugog Road, Blackstock, ON Seminar fee: $45.00 per person Daytripper Dog Training is pleased to offer a Rally Versatility Workshop presented by Kathy Blewett. The object of Rally Versatility is to show that the dog can perform exercise stations on either side of the handler. Rally Versatility must have between (15) and twenty (20) stations (Start and Finish included) and four changes of sides, one obstacle (either the tunnel or weaves) and a maximum of five stationary exercises. The remainder of the exercises will be chosen from the Novice exercises with a view to creating a course designed to show that the team can work smoothly with the dog on either side. Please note this is a CARO rules workshop. During the workshop Kathy will teach changes of side and the related Versatility stations. Then participants will have the opportunity to practice what they’ve learned by running their dogs through two separate courses. Please note that the obstacles (tunnel, jump and weave) will not be taught during the workshop but dogs are not required to know the obstacles in order to participate.
Prerequisites: It is preferable that dogs are able to work off leash but not mandatory. Dog/handler teams must be familiar with Novice Rally stations. All dogs participating in the workshop must be comfortable working in the presence of other dogs and people. About Kathy: In 2000 Kathy and her husband, Don, moved from Mississauga to the country and they now live on a hobby farm where Kathy cares for 60 sheep, four horses, three cows, three donkeys, a bevy of ducks and chickens and a pot bellied pig. Kathy holds a certificate in animal science and has a keen interest in rearing all of her animals as holistically and naturally as possible. Kathy co-owned Take the Lead Dog Training in Port Perry and she now teaches obedience classes for All Creatures Great and Small in Cobourg, Ontario. Kathy strives to remain current on training methodologies regularly participating in classes and workshops with her own dogs. In addition to their life on the farm, Kathy’s dogs are active in a wide variety of dog sports. Kathy and her dogs compete with the renowned Positive Pups Flyball Team. Collectively, Kathy’s dogs hold titles in Rally Obedience, Flyball and Disc. Since 2006, Kathy’s dogs have qualified for and competed in the Skyhoundz World Disc Championships in the distance and accuracy division. To download a registration form, please click here.
BODY LANGUAGE: YOURS, MINE AND OURS Date: Saturday, April 3, 2010
Time: 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Where: Cartwright Township Hall, 13940 Old Scugog Road, Blackstock, ON Seminar fee: $35.00 per person This seminar is a "people only" seminar; please leave your dogs at home. Seminar size is limited, so register early to avoid disappointment. Daytripper Dog Training is pleased to announce that the very popular Joan Weston of Fangs But No Fangs Canine Behavioural Consulting Services is back, offering an in-depth seminar on canine body language and how it relates to our communication with our dogs.
The first part of the seminar focuses primarily on human communication including verbal and non-verbal methods. Are you saying what you think you’re saying? We will examine some things that may be obvious and others that may not. The second part of the seminar focuses on the dogs’ body language and behaviours. What are they trying to tell us? When your dog yawns, what is he trying to say? (Hint: He’s not tired or bored.) When you ask your dog to do something and he looks away, what is he saying? (Hint: He is not ignoring you or blowing you off.) How do dogs behave when they are stressed, happy, calm, worried and more? Finally, the last part of the seminar looks at some of the myths of dog behaviours and some things that you may think your dog is saying by the way he acts or the things he does. Are you off base or right on? There will be a Q&A session at the end of the seminar, followed by a demo with some seminar participants’ dogs. We are looking for few social dogs for short dog play sessions and one or two dogs that are shy with humans and/or dogs to examine body language and communication between dogs themselves. If you are registering for the seminar and would like to submit your dog as a possible demo dog, please email us with information about your dog. Suitable demo dogs will be chosen on a first come, first served basis. Joan Weston is the owner and founder of Fangs But No Fangs, Canine Behavioral Modification, Consultation and Private Training Services. She has also completed multiple animal behavioural certification courses in learning theory, behaviour and aggression. She is the author of On The Couch, a behavioural column published in the bi-monthly newspaper Dogs, Dogs, Dogs. Joan also writes for Dogs in Canada.
