Humans are verbal, yet dogs do not join our families understanding our language. To them, until we’ve taught a behaviour (sit, down, come, etc), our ‘words’ are simply sounds.  Avoid confusion by first teaching a behaviour, then putting it on cue (aka ‘command’). We prefer to term cue because it implies a partnership between you and your dog.
